The Lower 9th Ward Homeowner’s Association is currently seeking donations. Linda Jackson, head of the association, is attempting to secure temporary housing for numerous residents who have been displaced by the storm and now want to return home but do not have the means to do so. Many of the former residents of the Lower Ninth Ward were senior citizens who owned their homes but do not have the financial means to rebuild their homes. Through donations, Linda hopes to purchase lots in the area that have already been taken from their owner’s due to their inability to pay tax on the property. She then hopes to construct temporary housing by purchasing materials and utilizing free home construction services that are being offered by church and non-profit organizations. This temporary housing will enable seniors to move back into their neighborhood and hopefully provide them a stepping off point to begin to re-construct their homes. The ultimate goal of the Homeowner’s Association through this kind of fund-raising is to facilitate the reconstruction and return of the Lower Ninth Ward to a vibrant community and too prevent outside interest from taking the land and using it for expensive redevelopments that former residents can not afford or industrial space. She also hopes to fill in the gap were they may fall short monetarily with financial or material support.
