Workshop Dialogues
Do bones whisper? They do in Lakeview. Resting on the fringe of the mostly-Caucasian community is the mostly-African-American Holt Cemetery. There lie housekeepers, cooks, baby-sitters, and butlers who served white families all over New Orleans. Who were they, really?

Jan Villarrubia and Adella Gautier will delve into those questions and provide opportunities for honest discussions in a series of reading workshops directed by Ashley Sparks and Kaia Livers. These sessions will be designed to explore the issue of racism in our post federal flood city. Villarrubia’s play-in-progress Turning of the Bones and Gautier’s monologues Five Dollars a Day and Car Fare and Daughters of the Ocean feature African American domestics. The mortal remains of the people who inspired those characters are buried in Holt Cemetery. Actors will read scenes and fragments of scenes from plays, and audience discussions will follow.

Please email vestigesproject@yahoo.com if you wish to be a part of these dynamic forums.
