How To

Video Production for the Web

This is for beginners. At first, you need a video camera, a regular computer with iMovie (or Movie Maker) and an Internet connection.

Record

Step 1
Get to know your camera. Get used to it by recording, stopping, zooming, etc. As well it is necessary to use and to know the following terms: Focus point (the clearest part of the video), Pan (move the camera left or right), Tilt (up and down), Zoom (in or out), Truck (move the camera left or right on a track) and Dolly (move the camera forward or backward).

Step 2
Next to the functions of your camera, you need a specific knowledge of different techniques for taking videos:

  • Light: Use natural or existing light and keep it to your back.
  • Movement: Use a tripod and, instead of zooming, walk forward.
  • View Angle: Recording above the eye level has the effect to make people look less powerful. Recording below the eye level gives a feeling of power. Stay neutral.

Edit

For shooting a common Hollywood movie it takes about 150 people. They will need about 3 months for producing. As well it will take 6 months for 1 or 2 people for editing. Those are called editors. They can be considered as editors of books or magazines.
For editing by yourself you have to import video and audio tracks into a program. It is also necessary to import other music, to access any built in sound effects or special effects and to play with titles.

Export

There have to be two different types of your video that are necessary to save:
The Master-Version: This is the real video. You are done with editing and you don’t want to save all clips on your computer, because it would take up a lot of space. The export should simply be at the same resolution you edited it. The file name should be named as “master”, or contain the word somewhere in it.
The Web-Version: This is the smaller version for your upload. It should have the word “web” or “upload” in the chosen file name.
