The Central City Heritage and Legacy group, under the guidance of professor and sculptor John Barnes from Dillard University, is creating a multimedia quilt to honor the lives and stories of our elders. Working with artist Jeff Cook and students from Xavier, Dillard, and Tulane at the Economic Opportunity Center, Barnes is establishing a series of story circles and conversations to develop the contents of the quilt. Bonding with community members takes time and persistence, says Professor Barnes. His group is focusing on building the relationships and trust necessary to making art with this community. When completed, the quilt project will express in visual form the experiences and traditions of the community elders who spend time at Central City’s Economic Opportunity Center.
