Students from Carol Reese’s spring 2007 History of Architecture class at Tulane truly enjoyed working with 7th Ward neighborhood leaders Cynthia Walters and Angela Chaulk who explained the neighborhood history, secured meeting rooms in the neighborhood and police protection and cooked wonderfultasty lunches.

Under the direction of FEMA Historic Preservation staff, who volunteered their time to work on this project, students took photographs and did surveys of building conditions, occupancy status, approximate age, building type and architectural style of all the buildings in the neighborhood.

FEMA plotted the information into ArcView GIS (interactive mapping/database program) and provided printed and interactive maps of the in-progress report of survey data for the CPS Showcase on April 19, 2007. We look forward to wrapping up the project and presenting it to residents in the neighborhood within the next month.

We are interested in continuing our partnership with the Historic Seventh Ward Neighborhood Improvement Association and welcome ideas for engaging 20 upper level students who will be enrolled in an Urban Studies course in Fall 2007.
